How Nomatrek Came to Be
Nomatrek started with a straightforward observation: most tourists arriving in Kota Kinabalu had some version of the same problem. They wanted to drive themselves — to stop where they liked, detour when something caught their eye — but navigating an unfamiliar road network in a foreign country was more complicated than they'd expected.
Standard rental counters handed over keys and a basic road map, then wished you luck. The gap between a working vehicle and a useful travel experience was something nobody had addressed well.
That's where Nomatrek began — not as a fleet business, but as a service built around how tourists actually use a rental car. Route sheets, stopover suggestions, mid-trip support, and documentation for travellers who want a record of their journey. Our office sits at 47 Jalan Kampung Air, close to the waterfront and the city's main arrival points.
Making Self-Drive Travel Accessible
Our mission is to make self-drive travel genuinely accessible for international visitors to Malaysia. This means more than providing a roadworthy vehicle — it means giving travellers the context they need to use that vehicle well.
Sabah has a lot to offer beyond the usual tourist circuits. Getting to those places independently requires knowing which roads connect where, when certain routes are practical, and where worthwhile stops exist in between. We've put that knowledge into the materials that come with every rental.
Whether you're here for a day around the city or two weeks working through an itinerary of your own, our packages are set up to suit the actual shape of your visit.

Our Standards & Protocols
Every step of a Nomatrek rental — from initial booking to vehicle return — follows a consistent set of practices developed around what travellers actually need.
Pre-Departure Vehicle Check
Each vehicle is inspected before handover. Tyre pressure, fluid levels, lighting, and documentation are confirmed and noted in a condition report shared with the renter.
Route Documentation Standard
All printed route materials are updated regularly to reflect current road conditions. Suggested stops are reviewed seasonally, particularly for routes affected by monsoon periods.
Renter Verification Process
International visitors are required to present a valid International Driving Permit alongside their home licence. Verification is completed before vehicle keys are provided.
Data Handling & Privacy
Booking data and personal information collected through our enquiry process is retained only as long as needed for the rental period and handled in line with our Privacy Policy.
Mid-Trip Support Access
For packages that include mid-trip reviews, our team coordinates a check at an agreed point along the route. Any vehicle concerns are documented and addressed before the journey continues.
Clear Pricing & Documentation
All package pricing is confirmed in writing before the rental begins. Inclusions, exclusions, and expectations are set out in documentation provided to each renter.
Tourist Car Rental in Sabah – What Sets a Purposeful Service Apart
Renting a car in Malaysia as a foreign visitor involves a set of considerations that differ from standard rental experiences. Road conventions, toll systems, signage in Bahasa Malaysia, and seasonal road conditions all contribute to a landscape that benefits from prior orientation. Nomatrek's packages address this directly by including printed orientation materials rather than leaving visitors to piece together the information themselves.
Our Kota Kinabalu base is well-positioned for travellers arriving by air at Kota Kinabalu International Airport, those exploring Sabah's interior, and visitors planning to travel between the east and west coasts of the peninsula via mid-stay or touring arrangements. We work with travellers individually to ensure the materials and route guidance we provide match their actual itinerary.
The tourist vehicle rental sector in Malaysia covers a wide range — from large fleet operators at airport terminals to smaller, localised services like Nomatrek. Where we differ is in the depth of travel support attached to each rental. We don't simply provide a vehicle; we provide the context in which to use it well.
